Tumeric – Scientific Name (curcuma longa)

Parts Used: rhizome (underground stem)

Main Actions: Anti-inflammatory (reduces inflammation)

Anti-platelet (inhibits thrombi/blood clots)

Anti-oxidant (protects against oxidation and free radicals)

Hypolipidaemic (reduces lipids/cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood)

Choleretic (increases production of bile by the liver aiding digestion)

Some therapeutic uses:

· Reducing pain and inflammation in osteo and rheumatoid arthritis

· to enhance detoxification by the liver

· as a protective against Alzheimer’s and cardiovascular diseases

· in reducing symptoms of peptic ulcers.

Warnings:

Caution if taking anti-platelets or anti-coagulants (blood thinners)
